Tackling rural regeneration
The current economic climate is doing little to help those families in the predominantly rural areas of the South West
who are looking for their first home. The challenge for planners and local policy-makers is to retain the skills of local people who grew up in the West Country, and at the same time provide for the needs of the many people who are predicted to want to settle in the region in the coming decades. Anthony Woodburn talks to Fliss Morey, Projects Director at Exeter and East Devon Growth Point, about the partnership’s ambitious development plans which are designed to tackle these issues

A taste of things to come?
Last year the Government published a paper setting out its thoughts on 'the future of building control'. A detailed consultation paper is expected shortly which will contain specific proposals for public comment. The outcome could see major changes in the way the Building Regulations are enforced, with proposals ranging from self-regulation on one hand, to increased penalties and new powers to prosecute on the other. Here Dave Baker (pictured), Chief Executive of Robust Details Ltd, gives SiteLines readers his insight into what the future may hold for the Building Regulations

Meeting the skills challenge
In 2005 2.41 million people were employed in construction. That figure is expected to rise to more than 2.8 million by 2011. To deliver this growth and replace those who will leave the industry over the period, an average of 87,600 new workers will need to be recruited every year until at least 2011. Can we meet the challenge? Linda Towell assesses the views of Sir Michael Latham, Chairman of ConstructionSkills
