Noise and precious time
The Institute of Acoustics (IOA) covers an array of specialties in noise, acoustics and vibration. The IOA membership of experts encapsulates a multitude of diverse discipline areas such as commercial buildings, auditoria, entertainment, marine, military, auditory, speech, electronic, seismic and medical acoustics, to name just a few. Two areas which collectively encompass over 50% of the membership are environmental noise and building acoustics. Dr Sean Smith of RMP Acoustics and Napier University explains why these two areas are so critical for new build design and quality of life for occupants Despite the fact that the UK has the oldest housing stock in the developed world, refurbishment is still regarded as the Cinderella of the housing industry and the poor relation to new build. This is odd as upgrading the existing stock is a sound and sustainable answer to the current shortage of housing.

Sounding off about sustainability
